choosing the puppy

There are some differences even between the littermates' temperament determined by the heredity of the paternal pair which belong to different lines. To have the wholesome watch–dog you shall choose, raise and nurse the puppy, and train the young dog independently.

General character traits of the future dog may be hardly determined earlier than at the age of 45—50 days. Active puppy who dominates over the littermates will match to a person with strong, firm character. Quiet and gentle puppy may be recommended to a person who can't handle strict leader dog. These points shall be considered to decrease the possibility of the disharmony between the dog and the owner what may make to part from the adult dog. There are many examples when powerful, original dog, what rottweiler is, ceases to obey the owner. When the selection of the puppy is referred to customer's decision, it's usually made by exterior only, for example: «the largest between the littermates»; «bright burnings»; «he first came to me», etc. It's impossible to guess future exterior and serving qualities of the1—1,5–month puppy. «Practicians» advices to choose puppies with «big head» or «short mug», etc. are unwarranted.

Decided to adopt a dog, one should first collect the information about the breeders. There are not too many breeders of rare breeds, but if one decides to take rottweiler he or she will be pleased by wide choice. But that's really important to know how to embrace the opportunity to find requested puppy. Conscientious and careful breeder will with pleasure show you the parents, comment their advantages and disadvantages, and their character features. Total breeder' posture shall be amiable, open and interested in leaving the puppy in good hands.

The puppy shall be descended from the thoroughbred parents, the breed certificate (or puppy's card), which defines exterior and working qualities of parents, is obligatory. Certainly, to get healthy litter, there's no need to exhibit male or bitch. But we also do not recommend to take puppy from parents, whose owners apparently avoid to show their dogs. There might be even wish to hide some exterior disadvantages. M. McFale cautions that apologies as: «…All bitches shall have at least one litter»; or «…My veterinary said that the litter will calm her»; or «…make her sure», etc. are nothing but tries to earn on half–standard breed material.

They usually hand out the puppies in 30—day age, but it's recommended to take puppy in 45—50 days when the breed features are more distinct. We would not recommend to take puppy from young bitch (younger than 20 months) — ideally she should be at least 2–year. At this age she's usually fully developed physically and psychically. Better to not take puppy from the bitch older than 8 years — such dog physiologically can't born good get.

Most breeders have possibility to look on the puppies and their behavior for long time enough. That helps to define each puppy's abilities. It's recommended to mark puppies by different leather collars or tapes — with the same color of hair for each of many puppies it's difficult to find out who's where. Shearing of different parts of body hardly helps. Breeders sometimes define puppy's future behavior by strict enough methods. For example, they define the tolerance and pain level. Puppies being taken for the nape act different. One will scream for pain and fright, others will bear silently. «Lows» are selected first. But that's important to consider that the tolerance would also be defined by the low excitability. In the future the puppy may turn into phlegmatic, flabby dog. It would be better if puppy will actively protest against such kind of unceremonious treatment — resentfully scream for pain, and then, seeing, that the offender isn't accessible to pity and doesn't let the puppy, the dog will growl and struggle. Prevalence sign is also vehement protest against the deliberation — if one above holds the puppy by the back, brushing him a bit – the puppy will bristle – eyes will engorge, puppy will grin and start to growl, trying to bit holding hands.

There's a common mistake that puppy's «black mouth» is a sign of malignancy. However the oral mucous membrane pigmentation level is directly related to the hair color intensiveness, for example, the brightness of burnings. And the pigmentation intensiveness is correlated to the steadiness of the central nervous system, and, subsequently, the poise. There's a rule of zootechnics that the dark hair individuals (so called melanists; pole feature is albinism — absence of melanin in the integument), are more steady to diseases and can work hard. Black horses have stronger hoofs. So, the mouth pigmentation may serve as secondary sign of his or her potential physical and psychical health. Furthermore, pink or spotty inside lips are meaningful exterior disadvantage.
