• birds' eggs

Birds' eggs are great food product — their protein has high biological value, though never go for long-lasting feeding by raw eggs as their protein contains avidin. [back]

• bread, meal and flour

Cereal bread, meal and flour (oat, barley, wheat, corn and rice) are characterized by high percentage of carbohydrates, B–vitamins and minerals, mostly phosphor.

Bread, usually black or wheat, is fed to dogs.
Wheat bread has higher caloric and protein content, than rye–bread. Bread is hard to digest and stays in a stomach for a while (usually 3—4 hours). Bread requires digestive tract to extract three times more ferments, than milk does. Daily norm of bread for adult dogs is 7—101/2 oz (200—300 g), for puppies — 31/2—33/4 oz (150—200 g). Feeding a lot of bread causes heavy fermentation: intestine gassing and constipation. Bread may be added to milk, or soup. Better give stale bread. Note, that many rottweilers admire fresh wheat bread and consume it with great pleasure.

Meals comparing to bread contain more carbohydrates and are main dog food. Well boiled oatmeal gives a lot of mucous decoction benefiting digestion. Oatmeal protein has lipotropic properties and favors on liver and heart disorders. High fats percentage makes oatmeal the first between other meals considering it's caloric content. Before boiling oatmeal shall be ground or presoak in cold water for 6—8 hours otherwise it's hard to digest. The most convenient and easy to cook is oatmeal sold in packs.

Manna croup is very well digestible.

Corn meal has quite low nutrients digestibility, it slows down fermentation and decay processes in the intestine. Corn meal contains comparably much iron, copper and nickel what favors blood formation.

Millet contains a lot of niacin, copper, manganese, and zinc. On long store of millet it's fats oxidize and meal gets bitter flavour.

Buckwheat is rich by lecithin what makes it useful on liver disorders.

Pearl and peeled barley are featured by high cellulose percentage. It shall be better boiled together with millet and oatmeal. Pearl and peeled barley nutrients digestibility is quite low, but they contain a lot of iron and folic acid. Pearl barley is usually included to ration on obesity and constipations.

Rice is dietary food for dogs. As well as oatmeal being soft-boiled it gives a lot of mucous decoction good for digestive tract.
Average daily norm of cereal for adult dogs is 7—83/4 oz (200—250 g),
for 1—3 month old puppies — 24/5—31/2 oz (80—100 g),
4—6 month old — 41/5—51/5 oz (120—150 g).

Flour for dogs feeding shall be used as boiled «shake». It's not as good for nutrients digestibility as cereals, so flour shake is rarely used, Cereal and flour shall be fresh, have no musty smell, no fust, neither bitter flavor. [

• vegetative food

Vegetative food. This group of foods is widest segment of dogs' ration and amounts 60—70% of daily need in energy. It includes:

Cereals (oat, barley, corn, etc.) as flour, bread and meal;

Veggies and roots.

Bean cereals (pea, bean, etc.) shall not be frequently given to dogs as they are barely digestible. If there's no choice, bean cereals shall be ground and boil soft. Then daily portion for adult dogs shall not exceed 31/2 oz (100 g) [

• green vegetables are necessary food products

Green vegetables are necessary food products as they are source of cellulose and vitamins. Dogs consume fresh cabbage, carrot, salad, and beet. Daily portion of veggies shan't exceed 101/2 oz (300 g) — 8—10% of daily food caloric content.

Most nourishing vegetable is potato, though it's hard to digest. Specialists believe potato decreases absorption of B–vitamins by small intestine mucosa, so it shall be rarely given to dogs, just when there are no other vegetables. Better give potato boiled, or raw immediately as it «sours» quickly. Potato spires contain poisonous solanin which may cause intestine disorders, so spires shall be removed before boiling, and water decanted after boiling.
Average daily potato consumption shall not exceed 7 oz (200 g) for adult dog,
24/5 oz— 31/2 oz (80—100 g) for 1—3 month old puppy,
41/5 oz— 51/5 oz (100—120 g) in 4—6 month old age.
Potato is usually given in soup.

Cabbage is source of C and K vitamins, it also can be given to dogs.

Carrot may be given raw as source of carotene (provitamin A), boiled red beet as containing sugar and pectic elements. Though be careful giving it as there're cases of poisoning by nitrites which form on long cooling of a beet (5—12 hours). Boiled beet shall be kept in a fridge.

Green stuff — salad, spinach — are used as soup additives. Daily portion of vegetables, roots (not counting potatoes) and green products shall be 31/2 oz (100 g) for adult dogs, 7/10—24/5 oz (20—80 g) for puppies.

Veggies, roots and greenery shall be fresh, no decay, no fust, no extra smells, shall be well rinsed in clean water. Dogs with great desire eat boiled pumpkin cleaned of peel and seeds. You can also give a dog tomatoes and eggplants. [
